Study: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

In today’s passage Paul reminds us that we are in a race and for us to emerge winners we must be disciplined.

I read the story of how Micheal Phelps-the United States multiple Olympic gold winner-prepares for a race, before he sleeps at night he imagines the race in his mind; how he dived into the water, swam along, turn at the other end and finish the race. He replays it in his mind over and over again.

On the day of the competition, he wakes up 6:30am, walks to breakfast, by 7am he will be seated eating his REGULAR RACE DAY MENU of eggs, oatmeal and four energy shakes.

He will then go to the pool side, stretch his body for about 30 minutes and then slip into the pool and begin his warm up laps. The workout took PRECISELY 45 minutes.

He then comes out, put on his swim suit, clamp headphones over his ears, crank up the hip hop mix he plays before EVERY race and then wait for the competition to start. He does this every time in his practice and when he is to compete.

No wonder he is a winner, he has developed this discipline over years since he was 12 years old, fine tuned it and stuck to it for years keeping his body under subjection. He knows he can’t eat like others, think like others and live like others, if he is to be a champion he must be disciplined.

Paul says if athletes do all these for a corruptible crown how much more we need to discipline ourselves for an incorruptible crown.

“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”

Is your body your master? All those things you are complaining about following God is it because you want to satisfy the flesh? Stop your flesh before it stops you from seeing God!
