Samu Gomina

It was a cool evening pregnant with lots of questions and I was looking forward to it.
I wrote some questions down that I was going to ask. This wasn’t going to be like any of those times that I had to listen keenly to someone’s issues and offer counsel. I was going to rub minds with one of the best minds I have met on my journey of impacting lives.

We finally met at our agreed location and skipping all other things that we discussed, we got to the story that brought tears to my friend’s eyes.

A young boy met her along the way and begged for money to buy food. She insisted that if he needed food, he should follow her home because she suspected that he was going to use the money for some other bad things.

Before she said jack robinson, the boy disappeared, confirming what she suspected.

Destiny wasn’t through yet, the boy on another occasion met a young man begged for money for food again. This time he promised to give him the money but he must follow him home to collect it.

The boy reluctantly followed and when he got to the house, he got the shocker of his life when he saw the lady she ditched some days ago.

He felt like the land should just open and swallow him but here he was with this tough lady again.
After she rebuked him and asked him some questions, the boy was given food to eat, hoping that the young man that promised N500 will make good his promise.

The two friends discussed and asked lots of questions from this boy but he wasn’t interested in their discussions, his mind was on the N500.

He asked for the money and after lots of stories from them, he was able to leave the place with N200m. A good deal for him.

Her mind was fixed on helping the boy, thoughts ran through her mind on what she could do to bring change to this boy.

She smiled when she remembered how the boy answered him when she asked him what was his name. The boy replied “Samu”, a short form for Samuel.

He was a typical village boy that was on his way to destruction but somehow destiny brought them together.

After lots of persuasion and counselling, she succeeded in enrolling Samuel in a primary school and gradually his life and attitude changed.

One particular funny but inspiring incident she recounted was when she asked him what he wanted to become in future, he said in Yoruba “Moo fe di gomina” (I want to become a governor)

That was how Samuel got his name “Samu Gomina” which means “Samuel the governor”.

Samuel is in Primary three now, he came second in the last examination, his English has improved and his attitude to life is changing. He is being sponsored through school by my friend.

Very limited space to share this inspiring story but I will wrap it up by saying wherever we find ourselves let us be the candle that chases away the darkness in people’s lives.

We can’t say we don’t have anything to give, lives are all around us looking for hope.

Temitope saw a village boy that was on the path to destruction and she rendered help. She is bringing a turn around to a generation through Samuel.

She has found fulfilment in saying I have a boy called “Samu Gomina”

What are you doing? Is it only about you and you alone?

Today make a decision to change!
