1 Peter 5:1-6
Peter has been encouraging and assuring the brethren generally on being steadfast even in the face of suffering.
In this chapter he turns to the leaders in particular.
I will call it ‘few thoughts on what true leadership and followership is about’.
– As a leader you are a Shepherd and it is your duty to serve and watch over the people you are leading. Their welfare and growth is your assignment.
We mustn’t primarily see leadership as leading but serving. Leadership is all about service.
Especially among brethren you must not begin to think you have greater privileges or you were saved in a special way unlike the people you are leading. We are all heirs of God in Christ. Sons and daughters of God… We are all qualified by the same grace.
This should tell me that if I lord my leadership on people then I am an immature leader. A minister is a servant… In fact that is the simple meaning.
The only reason that they help you with some things is because you are too busy serving them. Be a wise leader don’t ever let people push you into a place that pride secretly enters your heart.
– You must serve them willingly…you mustn’t serve them because you want to pick their pockets.
– You must also realize that you are to be an example to the people you are leading. Don’t be a talker be a liver. Don’t just say what you want people to do, do what you want people to do. People don’t follow what you say, people follow who you are.
Now to followers.
A follower today is a leader in training and a leader in certain aspects of life.
I see many followers desiring the position of their leader and who are behaving like Absalom, trying to steal the heart of men by saying bad things about their leader.
I will say whatever you sow you will reap.
Don’t be part of the crowd that talks evil about your leader. If you find that you cannot be loyal anymore leave that organisation.
Be humble… Serve with humility in due time God will lift you up.
God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
