In class with the director…

True life story

The teacher reported to the director that 14 trainees in the Hotel and Catering class didn’t pass their final examination.

“How come?” Mr. Stephen the director of the training programme asked.

“They failed the course Hygiene Sir and it is a compulsory course” The teacher replied.

The director asked the teacher to lead him to the class.

On getting there, he asked the 14 students to define hygiene. None of them could. He asked them to mention ways to be hygienic at home, school and in the environment. None of them could answer any of the questions.

The teacher turned to him and said “Sir as you can see yourself, these ones can’t graduate”.

The director faced the students and sang the primary school song in Yoruba. “Imototo lole segun arun gbogbo, imo toto ile, imototo ara, imo toto ounje, imototo lole segun arun gbogbo” (Translation: Cleanliness can overcome all diseases, cleanliness at home, cleanliness of the body, cleanliness of the food, cleanliness can overcome all diseases)

He now asked the students what is cleanliness…all hands went up. He asked them again, how can we maintain cleanliness at home, environment etc All hands went up again.

He asked the teacher to bring the exam questions again. And asked each question from the 14 students, they all answered it.

He turned to the teacher,”Can these students do the practical work?”

The teacher replied in the affirmative.

“So why shouldn’t they graduate. Big grammar can’t cook a good meal or serve well.”

The director passed all the 14 students with flying colours.

Lessons:
A good education trains the 3Hs, the head, the heart and the hands.

When passing knowledge to others, teach them with what they are familiar with.
