Book study: Romans 8: 1-11
Romans 8 is my favourite chapter in the Bible because it is a declaration of victory for me. We are going to study it in two or three parts.
Many people never get to chapter 8 in their lives, they are perpetually in chapter 7…falling and rising.
Chapter 7 from verse 1 talks about our lives under the law and our inability to be able to live according to the law perfectly, the last verse gives us the solution. Vs 25 “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. ”
The solution is Jesus. When we come to Him we must totally surrender ALL. Our will and our desires…everything MUST go. He mustn’t only be our saviour, he must be our Lord. Obedience per time.
Then it goes on to say that “with the mind I serve the law of God”. From today’s reading we know that it is with my spirit that I am able to live a life pleasing to God.
Verse 1 declares “NO CONDEMNATION…for those in Christ who walk after the spirit”
Verse 5 and 6, speaks of two category of people. Those that mind the things of the flesh and those that mind the things of the flesh.
It also says if we continue to mind the things of the flesh we will always fail in our walk with God(death) but when we continually walk with the Holy Spirit we will enjoy true life and peace.
Verse 8, those in the flesh cannot please God.
Verses 11- 14 summarises it beautifully for us. If the spirit that raised Jesus from the dead live in us, he that raised Jesus shall quicken(give strength,bring back to life,empower) our mortal bodies by the spirit in us.
This verse is usually used for healing but it doesn’t talk about healing from sickness but about quickening of our mortal bodies to be able to serve God acceptably.
For as many as I led by the spirit of God they are the sons of God.
