Kunle was jerked back to life from his reverie by a loud knock on the door. It was a Saturday morning, He wondered who could be visiting that early.
His brother and family had traveled the previous night on vacation to South Africa and he wasn’t expecting any visitor.
He was very surprised when the person at the door turned out to be Stella. He picked up the books he scattered around the house and put the living room in order and secretly prayed she won’t have any reason to enter his bedroom. The place was a mess with books flying around.
He was excited that Stella visited, he had invited her many times but her tight schedule hasn’t made it possible.
Stella was a good friend, she sent the Job opportunity at Xcel Communications for which he will be resuming on Monday.
She worked in a multinational oil servicing firm as the resources and productivity manager. A new post she resumed three days ago.
She used to be an admin officer but through hard work and favour of God within a year she became a manager.
Kunle’s heart raced, he opened the door with a big grin and they hugged each other.
She was looking smart and beautiful in her company’s T-shirt and blue jeans. He had planned to propose to her many times but somehow he just couldn’t.
He couldn’t match up with her in so many ways. She has a good job and earns well, he just got a job; She has a car, his own shoes are dusty from trekking long distances. They are very close yet world apart.
But she doesn’t see any of this, maybe she does but just ignores it. Instead of her buying things for him, she had always asked him to buy things for her which had made him beg his brother for money on many occasion.
The only time she gives him money is when he wants to have a program in his project for secondary school students and she usually give more than everyone else closely followed by Mr. Jones.
If the program is to hold on a Saturday she will be there, the only time they get to see each other these days.
They met at a youth convention of RCCG at the redemption camp he attended when he was in his final year at the University of Ife.
She was schooling then at the University of Benin and was also in her final year studying business administration.
They were together for the whole weekend at the camp and kept in touch even after the conference. He visited her in school twice.
And interestingly, he was posted to Edo state for his youth service while she was posted to Osun state.
She stayed for sometime in his parent’s house immediately after leaving orientation camp, he also stayed at her parent’s house in Benin.
They have been friends for about three years now and he has been pressured from all angles to propose to her even his mother asked what was holding him back.
What he really values most about Stella is not her beauty or her good background but her commitment to him. Aside his parent and Mr. Jones, no one has helped him develop and stretch himself.
She was always there for him even when he was discouraged at a point about everything not going according to plan.
As she entered his house with that ever present spark in her eyes.
He remembered the words of Mr. Jones
“No matter how brilliant or successful you are in life, you need people that will cheer you on.
Everyone acquainted to you belongs in four clear categories; those who divide you, those who subtract from you, those who add to you and those who multiply you.
Your focus should be on those who add and multiply you, then try to eliminate the other two categories from your life.”
Before today ends I may actually propose to her but let us wait and see what happens.
