Choose your truth
Days turned to weeks and weeks to months. It has been three months and two weeks that Kunle joined Xcel Communication and it has been great so far.
After the initial training session, he was posted to the sales department and was attached to a sales team that had a lady as the head with two other guys as team members.
The lady heading the team was one lady that had the reputation of being a tough lady infact most of the junior staff called her iron lady.
Margaret is a hard task master and generally people dread being on her team. A brilliant, articulate and beautiful young woman in her late twenties.
Her team in the previous year came tops with a very wide margin and she made it clear that the team is not ready to settle for the second position this year, that means all hands must be on deck.
The company just introduced a new product and it was her team that was charged with the pilot test.
Kunle didn’t want to be in sales and to even complicate matters, he is on Margaret’s team but after the three months spent in the company he realised to really be on top you need to work with the best, handle the big problems and deal with them excellently.
He realised that the only thing that made Margaret different was that she was bold, never afraid to take big risks, never afraid to fail and ALWAYS looking for opportunity to solve problems that people weren’t willing to handle.
The principle is simple, the more problems you handle the more visible your efforts and the more respect you command. It is only those that handle big problems that get to the top.
Those that complain, give excuses and run away from problems never amount to much in life. The world is a place for problem solvers and you can never be in obscurity when you solve problems.
Once in a while Margaret takes one team member to lunch and for the first time she invited Kunle. He had lots of questions prepared for her though the thought of sitting alone with Margaret sent chills down his spine.
Margaret noticed he wasn’t comfortable and asked “Are you ok Kunle?”
“I am ok” he replied
“But you seem not to be comfortable. Please relax and enjoy your lunch, this is not an official meeting and don’t tell me ladies make you uncomfortable” she said smiling.
Kunle laughed a little too much.
She noticed and said “I guess that is it. Ladies make you feel uncomfortable”
“Not really but maybe you make me feel uncomfortable.” He replied
“How do you mean?” She asked without any expression on her face. Apparently not surprised by his statement.
“The stories I heard about you and I was wondering how I am going to cope as a newbie on your team.”
“Kunle let me tell you a secret to success in life. Listen to what people say but never believe them.”
“What?” Kunle asked surprised.
“Yes you heard me correctly. I get that reaction every time. Most times people will tell you things that will make you shrink and not enlarge you.”
“They will create a problem that it isn’t there. They will tell you to handle small things so that you won’t fail. They will say because you didn’t go to the best schools that there are some things you shouldn’t try doing.”
“They will say bad things about other people but over the years I have realized all this come from their own insecurities. Because attitudes, impressions and mindset can be transferred easily without you being aware, I choose my own truths carefully. It may be the truth for you but my own truth is different.”
Kunle was transfixed for a minute and said “Profound”
Margaret laughed and said “Don’t let us turn this to a serious session, tell me about yourself. Are you in a relationship?”
Kunle thought to himself “Am I? No I am not. I don’t know why every conversation should always go in this direction.”
He replied “No.”
“Why not?” She asked. “Or you are one of those guys that keeps ladies all around and always tell every new ones you meet that you are not in a relationship.”
“No, not like that I have someone but I haven’t proposed to her. So I won’t call it a relationship yet.” He replied adjusting on his seat.
“This is getting really uncomfortable now. I don’t want to talk about this topic.” He said to himself”
“Ok you are right though but why haven’t you proposed? Don’t tell me you are afraid.” She said
“I am not afraid just not sure I am making the right decision. I have prayed about it and I have peace with her. She is a good friend of mine from way back but there is this lingering anxiety.” He replied.
“Kunle your words are contradictory, you have peace with her yet you are anxious about committing to her. But really every step in life is a matter of faith, you can never know 100% how the end is going to be but you know a God that knows the end from the beginning.”
“I will advise that you cast your anxiety upon God and take the step of faith. I want to believe she is a christian too.”
“Yes she is.” Kunle replied.
“Good, you can both go to God hand in hand and receive grace to solve any issue. The truth is when you have your friend as your spouse, it is bliss.”
“Thank you Margaret but what about you?” Kunle asked.
“I will invite you to my wedding very soon” she replied her face lightened up.
“Kunle, can I have both of you in my house on Sunday for dinner? Please say yes”
“For me it is a yes but I don’t know her schedule. I will ask her and get back to you.” He replied.
“Ok then, let us finish up this food quickly break is almost over.” She said.
Kunle said to himself “Dinner..just perfect..just perfect”
To be continued…
