The Threshing Floor Bible Studies Study Focus: Steps to Spiritual Maturity Topic: The disciple’s lifestyle (3)

Study: 1 Kings 19:19-21

We continue our study on the response of the disciple to the master’s call and we will take a pause on our focal passage, Luke 9 and look at 1kings 19:19-21 this day.

We will title the study: BURN THE SHIPS.

I read the story of Hernando Cortes, he led an expedition into Mexico to captures its treasures. When they got to Veracruz in the spring of 1519, as soon as the men unloaded the ships, Cortes burned the 11 ships.
By burning the ships, Cortes eliminated the options of going back to Spain, it is either they achieve their aim or dying trying to achieve it. It didn’t matter what he and his men were going to face, now they had one goal : COMMITMENT TO CAPTURE MEXICO’S TREASURE.

The disciple’s aim in life is to follow Christ whatever the cost. It doesn’t matter what he is going to face, he is not looking to Sodom at what he has left. He has burnt the ships.

But it is a fact today that many of us never burn the ships of our past…friendSHIPS,relationSHIPS, etc. We keep them in our closet, in the corner of our heart, that sinful boyfriend or girlfriend we keep fraternizing with them. Even though we have said bye bye…but we are still in touch. Our heart hasn’t left.

When Elisha answered the call, he had a farewell party, disposed off everything that could lure him back to his old trade. No wonder he knew what he wanted when Elijah asked him.

“If you eyes be single, your body will be full of light”

What are you supposed to do away with for you to walk with God closely? Are you serious in walking with God? Then make a COMMITMENT to BURN THE SHIPS of your past and FOCUS on God.

Are you ready?
